Maintain a Heavenly Sense of Vigilance and Urgency
1. "Sing praise to the Lord, you saints of His, and give thanks at the remembrance of His holy name" (Psalm 30:4, NKJV). "He is good to everyone, and His compassion is interwined with everything He does" (Psalm 145:9, TLB, NLT, CJB). But not everyone will give thanks at the remembrance of God's holy name. Let us explore who these people are! "This is my second letter to you… and in both of them I have tried to remind you… about facts you already know…. …In the last days there will come scoffers who will do every wrong they can think of and laugh at the truth. This will be their line of argument: ‘So Jesus promised to come back, did He? Then where is He? He’ll never come! Why? As far back as anyone can remember, everything has remained exactly as it was since the first day of creation.’
2. [Unlike the saints of the Most High God, scoffer will] ...deliberately forget... [a salient] fact. ...God did destroy the world with a mighty flood long after He had made the heavens by the word of His command, and had used the waters to form the earth and surround it. And God has commanded that the earth and the heavens be stored away for a great bonfire at the judgment day, when all ungodly men will perish. But don’t forget this, dear friends, that a day or a thousand years from now is like tomorrow to the Lord. He isn’t… slow about His promised return, even though it sometimes seems that way. But He is… giving more time for sinners to repent” (2 Peter 3:1-9, TLB).
3. Our merciful God is demonstrating forebearance. And while God demonstrates patience with the impenitent, you whom He “…has set apart… for Himself…” (Psalm 4:3, TLB), “…work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen, and then you will never stumble or fall away” (2 Peter 1:10, TLB). "…Guard your affections, for they influence everything else in your life" (Proverbs 4:23, TLB). "…Learn to know God better and discover what He wants you to do” (2 Peter 1:5, TLB). "…Be careful how you act; these are difficult days. Don’t be fools! Be wise; make the most of every opportunity you have for doing good” (Ephesians 5:16, TLB). "Make the most of your chances to tell others the Good News. Be wise in all your contacts with them" (Colossians 4:5, TLB), for “…we are Christ’s ambassadors. God is making His appeal [to others] through us. [Therefore], we speak for Christ when we plead, ‘Come back to God’” (2 Corinthians 5:20, NLT).
4. "...The time that remains is very short" (1 Corinthians 7:29, NLT); therefore, remain vigilant and focused. What does that mean? Let us explore Christ's message in Revelation. "Look, I am coming soon! Hold tightly to the little strength you have so that no one will take away your crown" (Revelation 3:11, TLB, CJB, NLT). "There shall be nothing in the city [of God] that is evil; [so 'wash yourselves and be clean! Get your sins out of my sight. Give up your evil ways' (Isaiah 1:16, NLT)], for the throne of God and of the Lamb will be there—in the City of God— and His servants will worship Him. And they shall see His face; and His name shall be written on their foreheads. ...Then the angel said to me, 'These words are trustworthy and true: I am coming soon! God, who tells His prophets what the future holds, has sent His angel to tell you this will happen soon. Blessed are those who believe it and all else written in the scroll" (Revelation 22:3-4, 6-7, TLB, CJB, NLT). But don't believe like devils do (James 2:19)
