“…You died… with Christ and this has set you free from following the world’s ideas of how to be saved—by doing good and obeying various rules—why do you keep right on following them anyway, still bound by such rules as not eating, tasting, or even touching certain foods? Such rules are mere human teachings, for food was made to be eaten and used up. These rules may seem good, for rules of this kind require strong devotion and are humiliating and hard on the body, but they have no effect when it comes to conquering a person’s evil thoughts and desires. They only make him proud” (Col 2:20-23, TLB). So what are you saying? “…What must I do to be saved? …Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and [you will] be saved…” (Acts 16:30-31). “…This Good News about Christ… is God’s powerful method of bringing all who believe it to heaven…” (Rom 1:16, TLB). “…God has reserved for His children the priceless gift of eternal life; it is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay. And God, in His mighty power, will make sure that you get there safely to receive it because you are trusting Him. It will be yours in that coming last day for all to see” (1 Pet 1:4-5, TLB). Therefore, don’t waste your time on the aroma—works—of religion. Christ rebuked that approach when He said: “Woe to you, Pharisees, and you religious leaders—hypocrites! You are so careful to polish the outside of the cup, but the inside is foul with extortion and greed. Blind Pharisees! First cleanse the inside of the cup, and then the whole cup will be clean” (Matt 23:25-26, TLB). Likewise, let your first work focus on faith in Christ, “for it is from God alone that you have your life through Christ Jesus. He showed us God’s plan of salvation; He was the one who made us acceptable to God. He made us pure and holy and gave Himself to purchase our salvation” (1 Cor 1:30, TLB). God’s method CANNOT be improved! Stop trying to please God by works, by obedience. God’s way is through Christ (John 14:6), and “…we have been made right in God’s sight by faith in His promises” (Rom 5:1, TLB)—the way of cleansing the inside of the cup! Get back to the way of your first love (Rev 2:4-5, TLB), which we receive from “…the Holy Spirit…” (Rom 5:5, TLB). “…Love is the fulfilling of the law” (Rom 13:10), and “if we love God, we will do whatever He tells us…” (2 John 1:6, TLB). Put first things first-“And now abide faith, hope, and love, these three; but the greatest of these is love” (1 Cor 13:13, NKJV). “If you love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15).
