What Shall We Do To Satisfy God - I

“You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God.  Good for you!  Even demons believe this[—that there is one God], and they tremble in terror” (Jam 2:19, NLT).  In another translation, the same Scripture appears this way, "Are there still some among you who hold that only believing is enough?  Believing in one God?  Well, remember that the demons believe this too—so strongly that they tremble in fear" (James 2:19, TLB).  The question that appears in the TLB is an example of a probing question that aims to increase critical awareness—the use of strategies to uncover deeper meaning.  Where did you get that?  "I... pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God's power for us who believe Him..." (Eph 1:19, TLB).  There is nothing wrong with belief—mental assent!  "...Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved..." (Acts 16:31, NKJV).  However, your belief in God must lead you to exercise faith in Him!  In other words, God is more than just an idea, something abstract, that you can mentally give assent to or agree with, and subsequently, "...like a man observing his natural face in a mirror, ...goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was!  Your belief in God must lead you to exercise faith in Him, and to trust Him.  God is the Creator-Redeemer-Sustainer-Protector, who requires faith that leads to transformation of life—thoughts, attitudes, choices, and habits.  Hence, the belief-faith-trust journey, in this life, calls for "…you... [to] turn from sin, return to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ….  Then you shall receive… the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:36-38, TLB).  "…When the Holy Spirit controls our lives He will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self-control…" (Gal 5:22-23; John 15:4-5, TLB); "…fruits in keeping with repentance… (Luke 3:8-10, NASB; Hos 10:1).  "When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples.  This brings… glory to My Father" (John 15:8, NLT).  "A tree is identified by the… fruit it produces…" (Luke 6:44, TLB).  "If you make a tree good, its fruit will be good…" (Matt 12:33, NIRV)!  "A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit…" (Matt 7:18).
