“We were… buried with Him through baptism into death…” (Rom 6:4, NIV). “He… carried our sins… on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right…” (1 Pet 2:24, NLT). “…Strip off anything that slows us down or holds us back, …and let us run with patience the particular race that God has set before us” (Heb 12:1, TLB). “…Your attitudes and thoughts must… be constantly changing for the better” (Eph 4:23, TLB). “…Have as little desire for this world as a dead person does. Your real life is in heaven…” (Col 3:3, TLB).
“…O Judah, do not join with those who insincerely worship me at Gilgal and Bethel. Their worship is mere pretense” (Hos 4:15, TLB). “I hate your show and pretense—your hypocrisy of honoring me with your religious feasts and solemn assemblies. I will not accept your burnt… and thank offerings. I will not look at your offerings of peace. Away with your hymns of praise—they are mere noise to my ears. I will not listen to your music, no matter how lovely it is” (Amos 5:21-23, TLB). “…Don’t just pretend to be good!
“…Tell the descendants of Israel that I will use my mighty power and perform great miracles to deliver them from slavery…. And I will accept them as my people and be their God. And they shall know that I am Jehovah their God who has rescued them…” (Exo 6:6-7, TLB). “You must not have any other god but me” (Exo 20:3, NLT). “I am the Lord your God. Keep yourselves pure… and be holy…” (Lev 11:44, TLB). “Once again Israel sinned by worshiping other gods, so the Lord let them be conquered by the Philistines, who kept them in subjection for forty years” (Judges 13:1, TLB).
“I hear a voice high upon the windswept mountains, crying, crying. It is the sons of Israel who have turned their backs on God and wandered far away. O my rebellious children, come back to me again and I will heal you from your sins. And they reply, ‘Yes, we will come, for you are the Lord our God. We are weary of worshipping idols on the hills…. It is all a farce. Only in the Lord our God can Israel ever find her help and her salvation. From our childhood we have seen everything our fathers had… squandered on priests and idols.
“Don’t worry about anything; …pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace…; …[which] will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus” (Php 4:6-7, NLT). Living in Christ Jesus means “…your sights [are set] on the rich treasures and joys of heaven…; heaven fills your thoughts, [and you] don’t… worry about things down here.
