“…Should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of His wonderful grace? Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it? Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined Him in His death? For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives. Since we have been united with Him in His death, we will also be raised to life as He was.
The works of the flesh are defined in Galatians 5:19-21. “…The unrighteous… indulge the flesh in its corrupt desires…” (2 Pet 2:9, NASB). “But you, [the righteous— (Rom 6:18; Prov 15:19; Isa 54:17; Rom 4:11, 22-24; Jam 2:23; Eze 13:22)—the godly person (Pss 4:3, NLT], are not like that. You are controlled by your new nature IF you have the Spirit of God living in you…. …The power of the life-giving Spirit—and this power is mine through Christ Jesus—has freed me from the vicious circle of sin…, so now we can obey God’s laws if we follow after the Holy Spirit….
“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of [God’s] throne…” (Pss 89:14, NLT). “He puts on righteousness as His body armor…” (Isa 59:17, NLT); “He will wear righteousness like a belt…” (Isa 11:5, NLT). Not surprisingly, “…the Lord [has] called [us] in righteousness, and will hold [our] hand; [He] will keep [us] and give [us] as a covenant to the people, as a light…” (Isa 42:6 & 62:2, NKJV) so that those who have “…NO light… [might] trust in the name of the Lord…” (Isa 50:10 & Jer 4:2, NKJV).
Some contemporary Christians talk about righteousness as if it is a theory. This is a mistake! Number 25:1-13 makes righteousness practical. Verses 7-13 are excerpt to illustrate practical righteousness!
“O My people, remember now what Balak king of Moab counseled, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him… that you may know the righteousness of the Lord” (Micah 6:5, NKJV). “…Israel remained in Acacia Grove and the people began to commit harlotry with the women of Moab. They… [made] sacrifices [to] their gods, and… bowed down to… [them]. So Israel joined to Baal of Peor and the anger of the Lord was aroused against Israel. …[When] the plague was stopped among the children of Israel, …[the death total was 24,000.
“…Quicken me according to thy word; …give me understanding according to thy word [and] …deliver me according to thy word. Your testimonies… are righteous and very faithful. My tongue shall speak of thy word; …my tongue shall speak of thy righteousness…. …All thy commandments are truth; …all thy commandments are righteousness” (Pss 119:154, 169-170, 138, NKJV, 151; Pss 35:28 & 119:172); and “…the righteous Lord [loves] righteousness… and judgment” (Pss 11:7; 51:19; 33:5). “…Who shall abide in [His] tabernacle? Who shall dwell in [His] holy hill?
